Why You Should Always Patch Test New Products, and How
It's exciting discovering a new product, but before you take that first spritz, pump or pour, you should conduct a patch test. We are all unique and while companies take extensive precautions to ensure that the products they sell are safe, you don’t know if a product is a good match for you until you properly test it. Read on to learn more.
What is a “Patch Test”
A patch test is a simple procedure where a person applies a small amount of product to their skin to see whether or not they will have an allergic reaction. It’s a common misconception that just because a product is natural or made with natural ingredients that it is less likely to cause a skin reaction. Whether a product is made with natural or synthetic ingredients, it’s important to take 24 hours to note whether or not your skin will be compatible with a new cosmetic, more so if you have sensitive skin.
Steps for conducting a patch test:
For a patch test to be effective, the test material should be in contact with a sensitive area of skin for at least 24 hours. To hold the product in place for several hours, place a few drops on the center of a Band-Aid, and apply the Band-Aid to the inside of your elbow or the underside of your wrist.
What to do if you have an allergic reaction:
If you feel your skin itching or burning prior to the 24 hour cycle being complete, remove the Band-Aid immediately and rinse your skin under cool water for 3-5 minute. Do not scrub your skin, since this may intensify the reaction.
If the full 24 hour period has passed, remove the Band-Aid and examine the test area. If it shows any signs of redness, swelling, itching or other irritation, it’s likely that you are sensitive to one of the ingredients in the product, so do not proceed to use it.
Rinse the test area with cool water for 3-5 minutes, avoiding scrubbing or rubbing the area. If the symptoms you experienced do not go away within several hours of removing your patch, seek the assistance of a medical professional.
Remember: Follow the policy of the company whom you purchased the product from to return it.
